Small Pussytoes (Antennaria howellii) Greene, 1897

 

Synonyms: Antennaria callilepis, Antennaria eximia, Antennaria neglecta subsp. howellii, Howell’s pussytoes

 

 

Antennaria howellii occurs in boreal and temperate zones of North America from Alaska to Newfoundland, south to northern California and North Carolina. It grows in dry sandy or rocky sites, including openings in forests and woodlands, savanna, rock barrens, dry lakeshores, pastures, and fields; sea level to 2,200 m. This is a stoloniferous perennial herb; highly variable morphologically; 4 subspecies. The stem is erect, pubescent, green to reddish, 8-35 cm long. The basal leaves are spatulate to ovate; the cauline leaves are linear. The flowerheads are arranged in corymbs. Tegules (bracts) are white or cream. This species flowers from mid-spring to early summer.
